Cypher Entertainment Freestyle Collaboration Versus Cypher Battle

By Catherine Allen

When it comes to the music world, there are many different genres. The same goes for entertainment. For example, an audience can be entertained by comics, musicians, poets and rappers. In some cases, such as a Cypher Entertainment Freestyle Collaboration, it is often two or more minds come together and perform improvisational rap in order to entertain an audience.

A number of old school rap artists have often defined improvisational rap as a talking performance with no substance or subject. Whereas, more modern freestyle rappers often rap about specific subjects or events. In fact, many perform short raps related to current events and politics.

The genre took on a different aspect in the 1980s when it was referred to as rhyme which was free of style. In many cases, during that time, this improvisational style was considered more bragging about oneself than a musical genre. Although, the same structure of being improvised in the moment and without lyrics or memorization was the same then as now.

The rap genre as it is now known is based on two styles, freestyle and old school. In the first, artists create and spit lyrics on the spot, often without any subject matter or substance. Whereas, in the latter, artists use set lists, lyric sheets and memorization to perform pieces which have been written prior to a performance or recording session.

Newer definitions which have been in place since the 1990s suggest that the genre which now features artists such as Freestyle Fellowship and others as well as a number of competitions now focus on lyrics which are created on the spot. Individuals desiring to know more about the genre may want to check out the documentary "Freestyle: The Art of Rhyme, " by Kevin Fitzgerald. For, the file explains what this type of improvisational rapping means to various artists.

The genre is more widely accepted and has even found its way into the Grammy's and other awards shows. While rap has now made it into the limelight, this was not always the case. For, even the most well known rappers had a hard time accepting improvisational rap as a real art form. For, many rappers who were popular in the 1980s believed freestyle rap belonged more in the Spoken Word or Poetry Slam scene than that of a musical genre.

A number of up and coming rap artists currently use the freestyle aspect to learn the art of rap. In some cases, these individuals create a rhyming game or carry on a conversation using the style in order to practice improvisational skills. While this is the case, the style has also been known to have been used for therapeutic reasons, as a way to discover new and different subject matter, self-exploration and self-promotion.

As for Cypher oriented improvisational rap, this often refers to a battle or contest between rappers. The American television show "Drop The Mic, " in which two or more celebrities go head to head in front of a live audience is a good example. For, during the show celebrities go head to head in a multi-round contest, once the battle ends a winner is chosen based on the noise level of the audience during a round of applause for each rapper.
