AI Medical Scribe And The Positive Effects It Brings

By Eric Scott

It is known that necessity is a prelude to invention. The healthcare industry is one of those that greatly benefited from this. Through these inventions, they have medical equipment that lets them know the condition of the patient. Now, a new invention is being recognized by physicians and that is AI medical scribe.

Paperwork is a nightmare for anyone who works on it. This is the also the case for these healthcare professionals. They have to do administrative work as part of the compliance with law regulations such as HIPAA or Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.

In creating this, innovators have worked alongside physicians to determine which aspects they need to improve in the current system. The EHR or the electronic health records is a system which digitally archives in real time the medical reports of the patient. They aim to reduce the administrative work of the physician so they would spend less energy on that side and go back to putting more energy in their line of work in the healthcare industry.

In their observations, they found out that healthcare professionals still needs to do documentation after office hours despite being burned out from handling patients. The cognitive part of their brain is overused and needs rest after back to back sessions. So they device a software which will help in lessening the burden this task caused them. That way, they can go home and rest in order to prepare for the next day.

An artificial intelligence is embedded into the software system. Its purpose is to help healthcare professionals in jotting down notes and other information about the lab test results of the patients. As its name suggests, it is an automatic scribe which writes the details down as they continue to talk during consultation. It eases documentation by collecting and grouping the data stored.

It has voice activation so they would not have to push buttons anymore. It starts automatically. With a few voice commands like pulling up labs tests, it can do the required work with efficiency. They would not need to worry about the documentation part anymore. Hence, they are able to focus with the needs and care of their patients.

It is also programmed to be a learning system. If there is a medical jargon or procedure it does not recognize, it immediately adds it to the data bank along with the corresponding description. It saves the hospital and the physician time because they do not need to update its system regularly like other software.

This benefits them greatly in two areas. First, it saves them time because they do not have to spell out what that particular jargon means or manually input it in the data bank. Second, it gives them and the institution cost savings for there is no need to spend additional money just to have a technician or the company provider upload a system update.

What makes this great and useful is it did not interrupt the workflow that they have going on. They are able to focus with what is important, that is the patient. They also no longer need to ask for any medical results from the diagnostics lab and leave their patient lying in wait. It increases their efficiency and productivity making their daily work fulfilling and successful.
